Day 1: Casablanca – Fez

Your guide will meet you at the Casablanca airport and help you transfer your belongings to your hotel for check-in.  You will have the remainder of the morning to relax and acclimate yourself to your new environment.  In the afternoon, you will take a tour introducing you to the marvels, monuments, and museums of Fez.  You will conclude your day with dinner and other accommodations at your hotel.

Day 2: Fez – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, you will cross the majestic Atlas Mountains as you travel to Erfoud, the southernmost town often called the “gate to the Sahara.”  You will spend your day discovering the rural environs of the Atlas Mountains’ Berbers.  Covered with evergreen pines, tall cedar trees, and poplars, and laced with flowing streams, your first view of the Middle Atlases will appear oddly un-Moroccan.  You will soon come across the first real town of the Middle Atlases, Azrou, an important market center for the region’s Berber tribes that is located at a major junction of mountain routes.  At Midelt, the Middle Atlases give way to the High Atlas Mountains, whose peaks are visible through the haze, soaring to over 12,000 feet.  You will stop in Midelt for lunch, enjoying the dramatic sight before you.  You will then continue to Erfoud, one of the most delightful southern regions consisting of a dry, red belt of desert with a sudden drop into the lush valley of Ziz, with copious date palm groves and flowing streams.  Your Sahara guide will meet you. In the oases of Merzouga then take you to your camp.  From there, you will begin your journey to Merzouga Dunes, exploring the ageless dunes and palm groves of this oasis.  Camels are saddled and tents are pitched for a big welcome to the world of the Sahara.  The remainder of your day will be devoted to discovering with your guide the marvels the vast Sahara has to offer.  You will conclude your day with a campfire dinner and an overnight in Erg Chebbi exploring the marvels of these majestic Dunes under the African skies.

Day 3: Merzouga - Khemlya – Beni Ali

With its indescribable beauty, watching the sun as it rises over the spectacular Merzouga dunes is an experience that should not be missed.  Afterward, you will eat breakfast with the Tuaregs and continue onward, riding your camels, to explore the ancient oasis of Khemlia.  There, you will visit the ruins of Sijilmassa, remnants of the first Arab and Islamic city of Morocco, and the prehistoric fossils present throughout the desert.  You will then return to your camp for the evening.  After dinner, you will enjoy a tea ceremony in the Tuareg nomadic style as you sit around a campfire under the starry skies.

Day 4: Khemlia – Bou Maiz

Your caravan will depart for Bou Maiz in the morning, traversing the vast desert to reach the green lands enclosed by hedgerows of Persian rose bushes and surrounded by date palm groves.  You will stop for lunch by the the Ziz river, and continue onward to Bou Maiz oasis.  You will conclude your day with dinner in a local family’s Kasbah, followed by Sufi storytelling.

Day 6: Zaouiyet el Maati – Abdelhalim oasis

After breakfast you will ride your camels to explore some of the best vistas in the valley of Ziz.  A stop for lunch will be in a palm grove where you can meet with locals and enjoy their warm hospitality.  Your journey will continue northward to Abdelhalim oasis, an ancient outpost for foreign caravans.  You will have the opportunity to encounter these caravans and enjoy their wares, and will then conclude your day with dinner around a campfire, freshly prepared from local cuisine before your eyes.
